One of the most popular requests from free Grindr users is to have unlimited blocks. What these users have to remember is that Grindr needs to make money. Although founder Joel Simkhai originally set up the app so that people with similar interests could find new friends nearby, since then Grindr has become a company. And all companies need to make a profit otherwise they will fail.
The two main methods by which Grindr earns income are:
Users of the free version of the app are important to Grindr for obtaining that advertising income. The more users Grindr has, the more they can boast to potential advertisers of the number of people who will see their adverts. And the more people they have seeing these adverts, the more they can charge the advertisers.
Free users are also important in keeping Grindr Xtra users happy. The more guys there are on Grindr, the more choice of guys Grindr Xtra users have. And with their access to specialised filters (such as ‘online now’, ‘only with a pic’, ‘my type’ filters) the more chance these paying users will be able to find the type of guy they are interested in, and feel they are getting value for money. And therefore are more likely to renew their subscription to Grindr Xtra when it runs out.
So free users of Grindr are important to Grindr for these two indirect income generating reasons.
But what about direct income generating reasons. Well it’s possible that if you buy something from one of the adverts Grindr might get a cut of the proceeds via a referral scheme. But the main reason they get income from you is if you stop being a free user and decide to upgrade to Grindr Xtra.
So to maximise the amount of value they obtain from you, they have got to perform a fine balancing act.
This is why so many of the features essential to be successful on Grindr are kept from free Grindr users. Including unlimited blocks.
Unlimited blocks (essential to remove time wasters, trolls, pic collectors, fakes and flakes from your cascade) are not made available to free Grindr users. Grindr want these non-legitimate profiles in your cascade to make you feel frustrated. Also, the more profiles you have to swipe through, the more often they will be showing you their ‘every x number of swipes’ adverts.
Finally the free Grindr users are often the youngsters. Generally with clear skinned and attractive profile pics. Grindr Xtra users are often the older guys. Not always with such clear skinned and attractive profile pics - but with the cash to pay for Grindr Xtra. If unlimited blocks were given to the younger guys, many of them would block the older guys. Resulting in the visual allurements of the older guys’ cascades diminishing. The older guys would then conclude that Grindr wasn’t worth the money and either drop back to being a free user or take their custom to some other gay dating app.
Huge generalisation? Yes, but have a quick scroll through your Grindr cascade and count the number of guys who state ‘no one over 40’ (or some other arbitrary age) on their profile or ‘not into old’ or 'be around my age'. Give these guys unlimited blocks and they will be taking themselves out of older (paying) guys’ cascades. Those older guys’ cascades will no longer look so pretty (although the average character ‘niceness’ of the remaining guys may increase).
If you are a free Grindr user and you are experiencing Grindr frustration at not being able to block unlimited profiles, this feature is being kept from you for a reason. It is because Grindr have a financial interest in keeping you frustrated!
