In June 2019 Grindr released a further upgrade to their app – Grindr Unlimited. This version comes with all the same functionality as Grindr Xtra, but also has some additional features.
Most of these features are to do with hiding/destroying evidence of your Grindr use. E.g., anonymous browsing, not showing in other guys’ ‘who looked at me’ lists, being able to ‘unsend’ messages and pictures. If you are not out, and being outed could be dangerous for you, then these features might be of use. Otherwise they are unlikely to significantly increase your Grindr success. For completeness I list the additional features here but, unless you are a guy who has to be discreet at all costs, my advice is to save your money and give Grindr Unlimited a miss.
1 – See Who Viewed You
This feature allows you to see who has looked at your profile. But since so many users swipe their way through the cascade, all this is going to tell you in a lot of cases is that someone spent a quarter of a second glancing at your picture before swishing their thumb leftwards.
Also what use is this information. If a guy likes your profile he will let you know, either by sending a message or giving you a tap. For your own self-esteem you really don’t want to know about all the guys who looked at your profile and decided you were not for them.
2 – Incognito Browsing
This allows you to look at other guy’s profiles without your own profile showing up in their ‘see who viewed you’ list.
However most of the time being in incognito browsing mode is going to be irrelevant. The majority of guys on Grindr will not have paid for Grindr Unlimited. So they won’t have the 'see who viewed me' functionality anyway.
3 – ‘Unsend’ messages and photos
This feature allows you to ‘unsend’ messages and photos that you have sent to a guy. But ideally you shouldn’t be sending messages and photos that you aren’t happy for a guy to see in the first place.
This feature might have some benefit if you send revealing pics and then further down the line you realise that the guy you sent them to is a twat. You can then unsend them. However be warned that it is probably too late. If he wanted those pictures for nefarious purposes he will have captured a screenshot of them the instant they arrived.
This feature also has the ability to make your message history gobbledygook. If you have a message exchange with a guy, and then he deletes some of the messages, rereading the exchange is going to make little sense.
4 – Typing Status
This functionality allows you to see when a guy is typing a message to you. So all it effectively does is give you a few seconds advance warning that a message is about to arrive. Calling this a ‘functionality’ is a bit of an exaggeration!
5 – Unlimited Cascade
Whereas free Grindr users have a cascade limit of 100 guys, and Grindr Xtra users have a cascade limit of 600 guys, Grindr Unlimited users have no cascade limit. They can view guys into infinity!
Although this initially sounds impressive, unless you live in a very big city, most of the guys in positions 601 and greater are going to be too far away to make a meet practical.
Also both free users and Grindr Xtra users can use the ‘age range filter trick’ to effectively view a greater number of guys than their 100/600 limit.
Grindr Unlimited seems to have been released by Grindr more for the sake of releasing something than for any benefit it brings to the serious Grindr user. The features seem mainly designed for guys who need to hide the evidence of their Grindr use at all costs. If this is not you, you can safely give Grindr Unlimited a miss.
